This week, State Senator John McCollister, a Republican who represents District 20 in Omaha, spoke out against his party’s harboring of white supremacy. He tweeted, “The Republican Party is enabling white supremacy in our country. As a lifelong Republican, it pains me to say this, but it’s the truth.” He is hardly the only one to recognize that the Republican party, as a mainstream political party, harbors extremist views. This analysis by the New York Times highlights the ways in which the Republican Party compares to extreme right-wing parties in Europe.
Recently, Michigan Congressperson Justin Amish traded his R for an I; although he did so over the “partisan death spiral,” not some sudden realization his party gave us a President supported by David Duke and has stoked xenophobia and racism at every turn.
The Nebraska GOP issued a press release calling for McCollister to register as a Democrat. In our mind, this only confirms their fascist tendencies and their dedication to harboring and grooming white supremacists. To his credit, McCollister has stated he has no intention of leaving the Republican party . For that, we salute him. As Dumbledore said, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Therefore, we would like to award 10 points to Senator McCollister. When your “friend” is Death Eater Peter, that takes some guts.
