Abortion is a form of healthcare that roughly 1 in 4 women* will seek in her lifetime. 60% of abortions are sought by women who are already mothers. Most late-term abortions are sought by women who wanted their pregnancies, but needed an abortion due to complications, such as a partial miscarriage that could result in sepsis. Please note that another medical term for miscarriage is “spontaneous abortion,” and it occurs in up to 20% of confirmed pregnancies – potentially more when considering early (spontaneous) abortions that are mistaken as “late periods.

*Some trans men & nonbinary people have the ability to get pregnant, but data for pregnancy and abortion doesn’t yet include this nuance.

Abortion is as much a part of a person’s reproductive rights as the choice to get pregnant. Both have been and remain under threat by those who wish to exert reproductive control over others. The information provided in this ‘zine is about the choice to an abortion – specifically a self-managed abortion, as the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson threatens legality in Nebraska (currently legal up to 20 weeks). “Self-managed abortion” might sound scary, but it can be done safely with accurate information from the World Health Organization, using medications that cannot be overdosed on and which have multiple uses.
