First things first.
THANK YOU to everyone for stepping up last week and making your voices heard on medical cannabis, tax exemptions for menstrual and breastfeeding supplies, and keeping “In God We Trust” out of our schools.
If the first week of committee hearings is any indication of how this session will go, then maybe we will actually pass good legislation this year instead of just playing defense like we’ve had to do in the past.
Speaking of not having to play defense, it would seem that the Nebraska GOP is tired of being the only red state in the country that can’t get it done when it comes to the NRA’s gun preemption and their Voter Suppression, I mean Voter ID, bills. How embarrassing for them. But how exciting for us because they didn’t even introduce them this year. They must have gotten tired of all that winning. And we get Senator Morfeld’s Red Flag Law instead, which would allow firearms to be removed from those at risk of harming themselves or others. This is even more exciting than the Huskers with the ball.
We’ll be keeping an eye on that, but in the meantime what’s coming up this week?
Unfortunately, nothing quite as exciting as getting to make the men of the Revenue Committee squirm in their seats by talking about periods and breastfeeding, listening to a football coach pretend he’s an expert on healthcare, or hearing a rep from the Evangelical Church of Satan talk about the possibilities that Erdman’s bill would open up for them, but this week’s hearings are no less important.
My personal favorite of the top GOP hits is up on Tuesday in front of the Education Committee. LB 399, makes changes to the current legislation on the Committee on Fascism–er, Americanism. Every year this bills gets killed and every year it rises from the dead. This iteration of the bill requires all students be able to sing the Star Spangled Banner, memorize the birthdays of Presidents, and call Colin Kaepernick unAmerican before they can receive their diplomas. Okay, that last one is a bit of an exaggeration, but read between the lines. We all know that’s what they mean. This bill was brought by Ricketts’ appointee, Julie Slama.
Fun Fact: Julie might be a bit of a secret snowflake, she went out of her way to strike the words “men and women.” Opting instead for the gender neutral, “them.” We see you, Julie.
Make sure you get your letters of opposition to Senator Groene and the rest of the education committee by Monday at 5:00pm if you want them read into the official record. And don’t forget to explicitly say that you want it included in the record. Otherwise, please come testify if you can. The Nebraska fascists are always out in full force for this one, so we need all the support we can get.
